Mayor to thank local volunteers at Red Cross call center, ask citizens to offer donations, support for hurricane victims
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson this morning will visit volunteers at the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis to thank them for working a call center for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
WHEN: TODAY - Wednesday, August 31; 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, 441 E. 10th St.
The Red Cross is seeking monetary donations for the relief effort, as well as volunteers for a local call center that is part of a national network that is helping support the relief effort. Mayor Peterson urged Indianapolis residents, religious organizations, not-for-profits and others who want to help the hurricane victims to contact the Red Cross.

"The events that have been unfolding on the Gulf Coast - especially in New Orleans - have been unbelievable and tragic," Mayor Peterson said last night. "Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who have lost loved ones, lost their homes and had their lives changed forever. The people of Indianapolis stand ready to assist our fellow Americans in any way we can in this time of need."
Indianapolis also is supporting the effort with Indiana Task Force 1, the specialized urban search and rescue teams headquartered in Indianapolis, which arrived in the Gulf Shores, Mississippi area late Tuesday afternoon. Task Force 1, which includes Indianapolis and central Indiana firefighters, paramedics and medical personnel, was deployed to "Ground Zero" within hours of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York.
Task Force 1 members will be working with their counterparts from Florida in Biloxi, Miss. to perform searches of collapsed structures for survivors and victims.
