Mayor asks citizens to call local Red Cross to offer donations, support for hurricane victims
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today urged Indianapolis residents, religious organizations, not-for-profits and others who want to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina to contact the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis to donate money or their time.
The Red Cross is seeking monetary donations for the relief effort, as well as volunteers for a local call center that is part of a national network that is helping support the relief effort.

"The events that have been unfolding on the Gulf Coast - especially in New Orleans - have been unbelievable and tragic," Mayor Peterson said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who have lost loved ones, lost their homes and had their lives changed forever."
"In a time like this, many people in Indianapolis are asking what they can do to help our fellow Americans in need," he added. "The American Red Cross exists for this very purpose, so I encourage everyone to coordinate their efforts through them."
"In addition, the City of Indianapolis stands ready to assist our fellow Americans in any way we can in this time of need."
As the relief effort continues, the Red Cross will be keeping track of the specific needs of victims in all locations and communicate with local officials and organizations.
