Legislature's failure to pass Indy Works to force cuts in city service, workforce for 2005, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and members of his cabinet will announce budget cuts for the remainder of this year and 2006 due to the Indiana General Assembly's failure to pass Indianapolis Works, the government reform plan that would have saved taxpayers $35 million a year.
If the state legislature had passed Indianapolis Works in its entirety, most of these cuts would have been avoided. If the state legislature passes the plan in 2006, most of the cuts will be able to be restored.
WHEN: TODAY - Wednesday, June 29 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Mayor's Conference Room 2522 City-County Building
When Mayor Peterson proposed Indianapolis Works in August 2004, he warned that if nothing were done, the city and county would be forced to make up the $35 million by cutting programs and services.
Services that are funded by federal dollars, grants or specific user fees are not eligible to be cut.
By law, Indianapolis Works had to be passed by the Indiana General Assembly. However, despite broad-based community, business and bipartisan support, the General Assembly refused to pass the vast majority of the plan. All of the votes against Indianapolis Works were along party lines.
