Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee to celebrate 40th Anniversary and 2005 Charles L. Whistler Awards

INDIANAPOLIS - The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee will celebrate its 40th Anniversary and honor community leaders Joe Barnette and Fred Glass with the 22nd Annual Charles L. Whistler Award.

WHERE: Indiana Roof Ballroom

WHEN: Wednesday, June 15, 2005
           7 p.m.

More than 400 individuals are expected to attend this celebration. Speakers include Mayor Bart Peterson and former Mayor Stephen Goldsmith. Senator Richard Lugar and former Mayor William Hudnut serve along with Mayors Peterson and Goldsmith as honorary co-chairs.

The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) was created in 1965 by a group of business and civic leaders and led by then mayor John J. Barton and local businessman Frank E. McKinney Sr. Since its inception, GIPC has played a major role in bringing together representatives from all sectors of the community to solve problems. As an advisory arm to Mayor Bart Peterson, GIPC represents a bipartisan alliance that is a continuing example of the public-private partnership that has played such a vital role in Indianapolis' success. Efforts led by this group have resulted in the development of Eagle Creek Reservoir and Park, the creation of the Indiana Convention Center, peaceful school desegregation in the city and Unigov legislation, among other accomplishments.
