Firefighters to rally at Statehouse, conference committee for Indy Works
INDIANAPOLIS - Firefighters from across Indianapolis and Marion County will gather at the Indiana Statehouse today to urge state legislators to use the final days of the legislative session to pass Indianapolis Works and help local taxpayers save $35 million a year, or about $100,000 every day.
Some firefighters will join Mayor Bart Peterson at today's conference committee meeting to discuss Senate Bill 307, which was passed by both the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate, but does not contain Indianapolis Works' cost-saving, government reform measures.
Later in the day, firefighters will rally at the Statehouse to push for Indianapolis Works.
WHEN: Today - Tuesday, April 26
10 a.m., SB 307 conference committee. Where: Statehouse, Room 431.
Noon, Firefighter rally. Where: Statehouse.
Indianapolis Works was endorsed by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Professional Firefighters Local 416, the union that represents firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), all eight township fire departments and the airport fire department.
Members voted by a margin of 86% to 14% to support Indianapolis Works, which would merge the eight township fire departments and the airport fire department into IFD and establish divisions based on the current townships.
Indianapolis Works has been endorsed by the organizations representing firefighters at three levels:
• National level (International Association of Firefighters); • State level (Professional Firefighters of Indiana); and • Local level (Local 416).
