10 days left to save $35 million a year
Councillors Sanders & Mahern to hold banner at Statehouse today
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana General Assembly has 10 days left to pass Indianapolis Works, the government reform package that saves taxpayers $35 million a year, Mayor Bart Peterson said today.
Last week, the Mayor held a rally on the Statehouse steps to urge state legislators to use the final days of the legislative session to help Indianapolis and Marion County save taxpayers $35 million a year, or about $100,000 every day.
Since then, volunteers have been at the Statehouse holding a banner outside the Statehouse urging the legislators to act and reminding the public about the consequences of inaction.
Today, City-County Council Vice President Joanne Sanders and Councillor Dane Mahern will be passing out material and holding the banner outside the Statehouse from 12-1 p.m.
When the plan was announced in August, Peterson warned that Indianapolis was experiencing what other cities across the country, such as Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and others, are facing right now: local government shortfalls that are increasing at a staggering rate.
Without Indianapolis Works, the city and county would be forced to lay off police officers, Sheriff's deputies and firefighters, close parks, cut neighborhood services and cut back on other important services.
