Free last minute tax help available at Julia Carson Center

INDIANAPOLIS - Former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employee Larry Barker is giving back to the community in a way that is very helpful to low income taxpayers. He is a tax preparer for the Indianapolis Asset Building Campaign, a coalition of Mayor Bart Peterson, Congresswoman Julia Carson, the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, the IRS and other community partners that encourages low income Hoosiers to take advantage of free tax preparation services.

Community volunteers like Larry Barker will offer free electronic tax return preparation from noon until 8 p.m. on April 14 and 15 at the Julia Carson Center, 300 E. Fall Creek Parkway. This service is available to families with children who have an annual income less than $36,000 and to individuals without children with an annual income under $20,000. Volunteers are trained and tested by the IRS and alert individuals to special credits for which they may qualify such as the earned income tax credit, child care credit and child tax credit. Indianapolis Asset Building Campaign volunteers also will offer financial counseling to educate families on building long-term assets with their refund using strategies such as Individual Development Accounts.

People should bring:

- Picture I.D.;
- Social Security cards for all persons on the tax return (including children);
- Last year's return, if available;
- All forms W-2 and 1099 received for 2004;
- Information regarding any other income received;
- The Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number and address of your childcare providers, if applicable;
- Information concerning property taxes or rent paid in 2004 (landlord's name and address for Indiana state tax return); and
- Bank account number and bank routing number for direct deposit of your refund.

Taxpayers can get more information or locate a free tax preparation site by calling the HELPLINE at 926-HELP (4357) or by dialing 211.
