Deputy mayors from four administrations write lawmakers in favor of IndyWorks
INDIANAPOLIS - A bipartisan group of deputy mayors from the administrations of every Indianapolis mayor since the inception of Unigov this week wrote Gov. Mitch Daniels and the members of the Indiana General Assembly asking them to pass Indianapolis Works this year.
Letter from Deputy Mayors
"Indianapolis has been blessed with strong leadership in the 35 years under Unigov," the deputy mayors wrote. "We are proud of our service with Mayors Lugar, Hudnut, Goldsmith and Peterson.
"Serving the people of Indianapolis and seeing the inside workings of a vital, growing city is a privilege and a thrill. We do not want to see the progressive leadership and hard work of 35 years undermined by a failure to act."
The letter was signed by deputy mayors:
*John W. Walls, 1969-74, under Mayor Richard Lugar
*Bruce B. Melchert, 1976-77, under Mayor William Hudnut
*Joseph A. Slash, 1978-89, under Mayor Hudnut
*John L. Krauss, 1982-91, under Mayor Hudnut
*John Ryan, 1988-89, under Mayor Hudnut
*Caterina Cregor Blitzer, 1992-93, under Mayor Stephen Goldsmith
*William Shrewsberry, 2000-01, under Mayor Bart Peterson
*Michael O'Connor, 2000-04, under Mayor Peterson
*Carolyn M. Coleman, 2001-05, under Mayor Peterson
Indianapolis Works will save taxpayers at least $35 million a year, provide more police patrols in Marion County townships and avoid layoffs of police officers, sheriff's deputies, firefighters and cutbacks in neighborhood and other services.
The plan already has been endorsed by the leaders of 36 of Indiana's largest corporations, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, The Indy Partnership, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
