City employees, neighborhood leaders to rally in support of Indianapolis Works
INDIANAPOLIS - City of Indianapolis employees and neighborhood leaders, who provide vital services to the people of Indianapolis, will gather in support of Indianapolis Works, Mayor Bart Peterson's plan to streamline local government and save $35 million a year.
WHEN: TODAY - Tuesday, April 5 Noon
WHERE: City Market
When Indianapolis Works was announced in August, Peterson warned that city and county government shortfalls were increasing at a staggering rate, and if nothing were done, the local government would be forced to hike property taxes or cut important city services.
In March, Mayor Peterson said at least $35 million in city and county services funded by property taxes would have to be eliminated or cut if the Indiana General Assembly does not pass Indianapolis Works this year.
These possible service cuts could include:
- Laying off police officers; - Laying off firefighters; - Closing city parks; - Cutting neighborhood services; - Eliminating leaf collection; and - Reducing street sweeping.
City employees who provide these important services will discuss what these service cuts would mean to Indianapolis residents and why residents should support Indianapolis Works.
