Mayor names members to Commission on Latino Affairs
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today announced the appointment of new members to the Mayor's Commission on Latino Affairs, the panel whose goal is to find ways to increase Latino involvement in city government and make city services more accessible to all Indianapolis residents.
The commission was one of the "Peterson Plan" initiatives the Mayor promised in 1999. In the plan, he stressed the need to open city government to Latinos and to all residents of the Indianapolis community.
The Mayor reappointed Maria Quiroz-Southwood of Wishard Health Services/Westside Health Center and Karen Celestino Horseman, attorney, as co-chairs of the commission. Ricardo Gambetta, the mayor's director of Latino Affairs, serves as executive director.

The Mayor's Commission on Latino Affairs, in conjunction with the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD), recently announced new measures against crime in the Latino Community and unveiled a public outreach campaign making Latinos aware of those measures. A new Latino detective and a new Latino outreach coordinator will be dedicated to working with the Latino community to improve communication with IPD, and a Spanish language campaign that encourages Latinos in Marion County to report crime by calling a designated line for Spanish speakers has been established.
