Mayor to discuss possible layoffs, service cuts without Indianapolis Works this year
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson this afternoon will discuss the possibility of public safety layoffs and city service cuts if Indianapolis Works is not passed by the state legislature this year.
When the plan was announced in August, Peterson warned that city and county government shortfalls were increasing at a staggering rate, and if nothing were done, the local government would be forced to hike property taxes or cut important city services.
WHEN: TODAY - Tuesday, March 8 1 p.m.
WHERE: Holliday Park Nature Center 6363 Spring Mill Rd.
FOR TELEVISION CREWS: B-roll is available from 12-1 p.m. where 39 second graders from Christ the King School will be visiting the nature center to take part in special crafts class.
Most laws governing Indianapolis-Marion County's governmental structure are included in a state statute, commonly referred to as the "Unigov statute." That means the Indiana General Assembly must approve the Mayor's plan to streamline local government and save Marion County taxpayers $35 million a year.
The plan had two hearings before the House Local Government Committee, but died with more than 130 other bills when the Indiana House shut down last week. Peterson will work with the Indiana Senate, as well as the House, to have the plan placed into legislation that is still alive.
