Mayor, Polian, to discuss impact of NFL Combine on Indianapolis

National event boosts life sciences industry, convention business in region

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian will discuss the impact of the National Football Scouting Combine, the event where the nation's top collegiate athletes take their first steps toward being NFL players, on Indianapolis' life sciences industry and convention business.

During the week-long event, more than 2,500 coaches, team owners and advertisers and more than 220 national journalists from across the country come to Indianapolis for seven days to meet and work out the athletes who hope to be drafted by NFL teams on April 23-24, 2005.

Others on hand will include:

• Fred Glass, president, Marion County Capital Improvement Board

• Sam Odle, president & chief operating officer, Methodist & Indiana University Hospitals

• Dr. Richard Graffis, MD, chief medical officer, Clarian Health Partners

• Dr. Doug McKeag, MD, Fellow, American College of Sports Medicine, & director, Indiana University Center for Sports Medicine

WHEN: Tomorrow - Saturday, February 26; 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Indiana Convention Center, Rooms 107-110 (no credentials necessary)

Indianapolis has hosted the combine at the RCA Dome since 1987 and presently has a commitment from the NFL to host it through 2007. As a part of the convention center expansion and new venue project, the NFL has agreed to extend the deal and make Indianapolis part of any permanent rotation going forward, if the league decides to rotate the combine to other cities.

The combine is a part of the historic economic development project that will benefit Indiana and Indianapolis by pumping $2.25 billion into the economy and creating more than 4,200 permanent jobs and 4,900 construction jobs over the next 10 years.

The combine itself provides about $2.8 million in economic benefit a year to Indianapolis, but has a significant impact on the life sciences industry and draws national and international media attention to Indianapolis.
