ESPN.com names Colts as NFL's #1 team for fans
Indianapolis - ESPN.com has ranked the Indianapolis Colts as the National Football League's top fan-friendly team. It also ranked the Colts third among 90 professional sports teams in the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball.
First, Markitecture, a Connecticut opinion research and consulting firm, conducted a national poll to determine what issues were important to fans. Then, more than 40,000 fans were asked to rate one team per sport (NFL, NBA, and MLB) in 21 categories. The 21 categories were reduced to seven broad rankings and an eighth ranking, "Bang for the Buck."
In addition to being the top NFL team and third overall best franchise, other Colts fan satisfaction rankings among NFL, NBA, and MLB teams were:
• 2nd: "Bang for the Buck" (revenues directly from fans divided by wins in the past three years, teams whose owners spend their own money and spend it wisely);
• 3rd: Players (effort on the field, likeability off the field);
• 6th : Fan Relations (ease of access to players, coaches & management);
• 12th: Affordability (price of tickets, parking and concessions);
• 13th: Coach (strong on-field leadership);
• 25th: Ownership (honesty, loyalty to players and city);
• 26th: Championships (titles already won or expected); and
• 70th: Stadium experience (friendliness of environment, quality of game day promotions).
"These rankings confirm what we already know: Indianapolis is a sports town that can't be beat, and the Colts ownership and staff do all they can to put an exciting team on the field, while making ticket prices affordable," said Steve Campbell, Indianapolis deputy mayor and co-chair of the Colts-Business Alliance public awareness committee. "As a Colts fan, I'm glad our franchise has such great appreciation for its fans."
