Mayor, DeHaan to host luncheon for charter schools
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and Philanthropist Christel DeHaan will host the "Promise of Charter Schools in Indianapolis" luncheon tomorrow.
The luncheon is an opportunity to create enthusiasm for charter schools and engage business and community leaders in existing and prospective charter schools in Indianapolis.

WHERE: Hyatt Regency Hotel One South Capitol Regency Ballroom
The luncheon will feature nationally renowned speaker Geoffrey Canada, President and Chief Executive Officer for Harlem Children's Zone, Inc. Mr. Canada is nationally known for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform.
Among many other programs, HCZ started The Promise Academy charter school in Central Harlem. The Promise Academy, authorized by the Chancellor of New York City Schools, offers a rigorous curriculum, small class sizes, a longer school day and school year and includes an after-school program.
The work of Mr. Canada and HCZ has become a national model and has been the subject of many profiles in the media such as "The Today Show," "Good Morning America," "Nightline," "CBS This Morning," as well in articles in The New York Daily News, USA Today and Newsday.
