Former leader of NAACP to speak in Indianapolis tonight
INDIANAPOLIS - The Celebration of Diversity Lecture Series presents "Race: Exploring America's Agenda," a lecture by Kweisi Mfume, the former president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP.) The event is part of the Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series, a partnership between the City of Indianapolis and Butler University.
WHEN: TONIGHT - Wednesday, February 9, 2005 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Butler University, Clowes Hall
The series brings leading national and local figures to town to deliver lectures on issues of importance to our society. While serving as leader of the NAACP, Mfume raised the standards and expectations of NAACP branches nationwide, and he mobilized NAACP volunteers across the country to usher in a new generation of civil rights advocacy and leadership.
The lecture series is another step the Mayor is taking to continue the dialogue about diversity in Indianapolis. In January 2000, he hosted the Mayor's Summit on Race Relations, which brought together more than 900 Indianapolis residents to bridge the gaps that sometimes exist between people of different races, religions and backgrounds. He also created the Mayor's "Celebration of Diversity" Award, a recognition of businesses and other organizations that have a history of promoting minorities and women, outstanding diversity training and involvement in the community.
The Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series is a collaborative diversity initiative between Butler University and the Office of the Mayor, with generous support from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, Vectren Corporation, Allison Transmission, and Anthem.
