Mayor, Sheriff & Council President to discuss police merger today
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson, Sheriff Frank Anderson and City-County Council President Steve Talley will be available to the media today to discuss the merger of the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, which was passed by a bi-partisan vote last night by the City-County Council.
The three will comprise the Law Enforcement Consolidation Transition Authority, which will make the final decisions regarding the merger after working by a transition Steering Committee, made up of law enforcement officers, and a transition Advisory Committee, comprised of law enforcement officers and other local leaders.
WHEN: TODAY - Tuesday, December 20; 10 a.m.
WHERE: Mayor’s Conference Room, 2522 City-County Building
As a result of the merger:
• Taxpayers throughout the city and county will get enhanced police coverage. Beat officers will not be moved out of the IPD district. Police patrols & coverage will improve in the townships.
• The sheriff, through his or her appointed chief, will have authority over the operation of the new agency.
• The city and county will provide better service at a lower cost. Savings from this plan are documented and available on www.IndyGov.org.
