Peterson elected First Vice President of National League of Cities

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson was elected as the first vice president of the National League of Cities (NLC), the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing municipal governments, at the NLC Congress of Cities in Charlotte, North Carolina last week.

His election puts him in line to be president of NLC, which represents 18,000 U.S. cities throughout the United States, next year.

Former Indianapolis mayors Richard Lugar and William Hudnut also served as NLC president.

"As the first responders, first providers and the level of government closest to the people, cities must be at the forefront of national and state policies," Mayor Peterson said. "I look forward to being a strong voice for Indianapolis and other cities across our state and country."

Throughout his first term as mayor, Mayor Peterson has taken an active role in statewide and national organizations that advance the cause of cities and towns and their residents.

Peterson has served as NLC second vice president for the past year and on NLC’s Board of Directors, its governing body, for the past two years. He also has chaired NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education & Families, which advances policies and initiatives that benefit children and families.

Peterson currently is president of the Indiana Association of Cities & Towns, the affiliation of the state’s municipalities that works to advance the cause of cities and towns at the state and federal levels.

He also has served as the president of the Indiana Metropolitan Mayors and as committee chair for the U.S Conference of Mayors.
