Broad, bi-partisan group of leaders to join to support police merger
Indianapolis - Mayor Bart Peterson and community leaders today will hold a press conference to announce their support for merging the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
The Mayor will be joined by:
- Former Deputy Mayors from previous mayoral administrations
- Former City-County Council President Dr. Beurt SerVaas
- Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce
- Indiana Chamber of Commerce
- Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee
- Indianapolis Works Inc.
- Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors
When: TODAY - Friday, November 11 2:30 p.m.
Where: Mayor’s Conference Room 2522 City-County Building
By merging the police departments:
Residents throughout the city and county will get enhanced police coverage;
The sheriff, through his appointed chief, will have authority over the operation of the new agency;
The city and county will provide better service at a lower cost; and
The city and county can avoid laying off 48 IPD officers and future cuts in Sheriff’s deputies;
In addition, new amendments to the proposal - passed by the Council’s Law Enforcement Consolidation Committee on Monday - take into account suggestions made by the Sheriff’s Department, other law enforcement officials and community leaders.
The full Council will vote on the merger on Monday, November 14.
