Mayor to present Excellence in Education award
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will present the Excellence in Education award to Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke and Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) Superintendent Eugene G. White for their collaboration on the Purdue Science Bound Program.
WHEN: Friday, November 11 12 - 1:30 p.m. (the award presentation will take place at 12:30)
WHERE: Downtown Marriott, Indiana Ballrooms F, G, & H 352 West Maryland Street
The Purdue Science Bound program is a community outreach initiative that exposes IPS students and their parents to the various aspects of technical career training offered at Purdue University. Local Indianapolis companies including Bowen Engineering, Duke Realty Corp., GE Foundation, USA Funds, and Rolls Royce Applied Engineering Services serve as corporate sponsors that provide funds for summer camps, after-school programs, and the annual dinner.
Developed by Dr. Jischke, the Science Bound program provides mentoring for 8th through 12th grade IPS students by encouraging them to enroll in science, math and technology classes and supports their pursuit of careers in those areas. IPS students who complete the five-year Science Bound program and gain acceptance to Purdue in an approved field will receive a full scholarship to Purdue University. It is estimated that there will be 150 Science Bound students in IPS this school year.
The award will be presented during the President's Executive Roundtable Luncheon, a quarterly meeting of Purdue Alumni and Trustees.
