Statement from Mayor Peterson on the passing of Rosa Parks
"Long before there were marches and rallies in the sixties, before the TV cameras and newspapers turned the eyes of the nation on the centuries-old injustices in the South, and long before there were laws protecting civil rights in every state of the union, there was Rosa Parks.
"By refusing to give up her seat, she inspired the rest of America to begin giving up its way of thinking. Ms. Parks was the cornerstone of the modern civil rights movement, and she was a shining example of what one person can do to change the world.
"I had a chance to meet her briefly when she was in Indianapolis to celebrate her Congressional Gold Medal, and our entire community stood in awe in her presence. She was loyal soldier in this fight for justice, and although we will miss her deeply, no one deserves this glorious homecoming more than her."
