Mayor to present Character Counts award
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson will present a Character Counts award to the students of Saint Roch Catholic School for their extraordinary efforts to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
WHEN: Tuesday, October 25 8:30 - 9 a.m.
WHERE: St. Roch Catholic Church 3600 South Pennsylvania Street (The school is located at 3603 South Meridian Street)
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit, St. Roch’s Pastor Fr. James Wilmoth made contact with two Mississippi schools that suffered extensive damage after Hurricane Katrina. After learning of their tremendous misfortune and great need, it was decided that half the amount raised for Roch-A-Thon, the school's annual fundraiser, would be donated to Mercy and Resurrection Schools in Mississippi.
This year's goal was to raise $20,000, substantially more than prior years. As an added incentive, School Principal Joe Hansen pledged to sleep on the roof of the school if the goal was achieved. With a student population of only 270, the students and teachers raised $24,600 for this year's Roch-A-Thon. With such an outpouring of support, it was decided that the full amount raised would be donated to the two Mississippi schools. Combined with offerings from parishioners, St. Roch raised nearly $43,000 to assist two schools in desperate need of help.
Mayor Peterson created the Character Counts Award during his first month in office to recognize acts of good character. Mayor Peterson gives the award to recognize students, student organizations, and schools whose conduct reflects exemplary character.
