Family Guide to Public Schools website updated
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson’s Family Guide to Public Schools in Indianapolis website has been updated with information about new schools that will open in the fall. In addition, all existing schools have revised their information.
The Mayor’s Family Guide is a comprehensive, online resource for information about public education in Indianapolis. Since it went on-line in October 2004, more than 115,000 people have visited the site.
Parents can reach the website at imaps.indygov.org/schools. There also are links to the site from other websites including the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors (MIBOR) and the City of Indianapolis’ home page.
From the site, parents can:
· View a list of all public schools in Indianapolis;
· Search for a specific public school in Indianapolis, by characteristic or by address;
· Read an overview of schooling options in Indianapolis; and
· Visit links to other helpful resources for families.
The website contains a host of information about every public school in Indianapolis, including basic information about how to contact the principal as well as detailed descriptions of each school’s academic program. There are also links to state performance data and maps that show where each school is located.
Another unique feature of the site allows parents to enter an address and get a list of all the schools their children are eligible to attend, including geographically assigned schools, magnet schools and charter schools. The entire site is available in Spanish.
Five new schools, including three charter schools, are highlighted in the site. Thompson Crossing Elementary is opening in Franklin Township to accommodate a growing numbers of students there. The Intermediate Learning Academy in Decatur Township will serve fifth and sixth grade students and offer a smaller, more individualized learning environment where students get more one-on-one attention.
Three new charter schools sponsored by the Mayor’s office will open this fall. The Decatur Discovery Academy uses the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound school model. At the Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School, arts infusion is a key component of the curriculum for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The 21st Century Charter School at Fountain Square provides an individualized learning plan for each student in grades 6 - 9. For more information on the charter schools, visit the Mayor’s charter school website at /eGov/Mayor/Education/Charter/home.htm.
