Mayor and Library Announce Theme of Reading a Real Page-Turner for Fourth Year of “One Book, One City - Indy’s Choice” Program

Indianapolis residents invited to recommend a book by Nov. 1

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) have again asked city residents to nominate books that would unite the city around reading through the "One Book, One City - Indy’s Choice" program. This year’s theme is: "What if all of Indianapolis read a real page-turner?"

"Mysteries, thrillers, dramas and great love stories are all examples of books that could be real page-turners," Mayor Bart Peterson said. "Everyone can think of a book they just couldn’t put down because they had to read on to find out what would happen next. We’d like Indianapolis residents to recommend books they found hard to stop reading."

Residents can submit their recommendations and post book reviews at http://onebook.imcpl.org until November 1. Nomination forms and ballot boxes also are located at all Indianapolis-Marion County Library branches and in Borders bookstores in Marion County.

Program officials offer residents the following guidelines for making a book recommendation:

  • Choose a book that is still available in print (usually a major author with a body of work).
  • Choose a book that is likely to encourage participation and will appeal to a wide readership.
  • Choose a book that inspires discussion, response and reflection through well-developed characters and issues with which readers can identify.

On November 17, program officials will announce "Indy’s 25," a list of 25 books based on residents’ recommendations. This year’s "One Book" will be announced in mid-December.

Throughout January, residents will be encouraged to participate in book discussions and other "One Book"-related programming at their local libraries and other locations.

The first three years of the "One Book, One City" program were a tremendous success. Last year, more than 2,000 copies of "A Bondswoman Narrative" by Hannah Crafts and edited by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.were sold through IMCPL. Circulation copies were checked out 1,952 times. In 2003, 1,800 copies of "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing were sold through IMCPL and circulation copies were checked out 2,744 times. During the inaugural year, 2,300 copies of "The Friendly Persuasion," by Indiana-born author Jessamyn West, were sold through IMCPL, and circulation copies were checked out 3,424 times.

"One Book, One City - Indy’s Choice," a collaboration between the City of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, was created to unite the community around reading and discussing one book. The program is made possible in part through the support of the Netherleigh Fund and IPL.
