Peterson elected president of state Association of Cities & Towns
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson has been elected as president of the Indiana Association of Cities & Towns (IACT), the coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana through effective government.
IACT advocates for municipalities as the official voice of municipal government in Indiana, and promotes good government through education, training and leadership.
Peterson was elected last week at the IACT annual meeting in Fort Wayne, and succeeds out-going president Mary Olson, a city council member from Elkhart. As president, he will lead IACT’s statewide initiatives and legislative efforts to better serve the residents of Hoosier cities and towns.
One project IACT is undertaking this year is to design legislation that provides more efficient local government by reducing reliance on property taxes and restructuring municipal finance to give municipal officials flexible funding options to more effectively serve their citizens.
"Most Hoosiers live in cities and towns, and the issues that face our residents should be at the forefront of public discussion," Mayor Peterson said. "I am excited to continue working with our outstanding local officials around the state to move Indianapolis forward and make local government as effective and efficient as possible."
As the official voice of municipal government in Indiana, IACT was founded in 1891 as a voluntary, non-profit, non-partisan organization. Its elected leadership considers geographical representation, municipalities of different sizes, and balance of political parties in establishing its legislative agenda, goals and objectives.
Peterson also serves as a vice president of the National League of Cities, the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States and serves as a resource and advocate for 18,000 U.S. cities.
