Peterson, city staffers to take Indianapolis Works to the streets in all nine townships

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson and more than 50 city staff members will walk door-to-door in neighborhoods in all nine townships to talk with residents about Indianapolis Works.

Indianapolis Works, by streamlining and reducing the size of government, saves local property taxpayers $35 million every year and provides a tax benefit to property taxpayers in every township.

While staffers spread out to all nine townships, Peterson will walk door-to-door in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, an area hit hard by court-ordered property tax reassessment in 2003.

WHEN: Tomorrow - Saturday, January 29; 11 a.m.

WHERE: Starting at 420 E. 47th St. (corner of 47th & Central Ave.)
Parking is available at First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, 4701 N. Central Ave.

Today's walk continues the Mayor's effort to share the plan and its tax benefits with the Indianapolis community. Since proposing Indianapolis Works last August, he and his administration have:

• Spoken with more than 100 neighborhood associations, business leaders and community groups about the plan;

• Testified before the Indiana General Assembly's Local Government Efficiency & Financing Study Commission;

• Created the Indianapolis Works Advisory Panel, a blue-ribbon commission that took public input and testimony at four public meetings.

• Released specific reports detailing the exact cost savings from all aspects of the plan.
