Firefighters union to deliver official endorsement of Indianapolis Works, savings to Mayor
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson tomorrow will officially pick up a major endorsement of Indianapolis Works from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Professional Firefighters Local 416, the union that represents firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), all eight township fire departments and the airport fire department.
If passed by the state legislature, Indianapolis Works will merge the eight township fire departments and the airport fire department into IFD and establish divisions based on the current townships.
Local firefighters earlier this month voted overwhelmingly to endorse the proposal, by a margin of 87 percent to 13 percent.
Local 416 also officially will endorse the city's fiscal analysis, which shows that merging the fire departments will save property taxpayers $20.8 million per year and avoid a massive tax increase.
