Coleman to leave Mayor's Office for private practice; Campbell named new deputy mayor
INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bart Peterson today announced that Carolyn Coleman, deputy mayor for neighborhoods for the past four years, will leave her post to become a vice president with B & D Sagamore, a Washington, D.C., based subsidiary of the Indianapolis law firm of Baker & Daniels, where she will focus her efforts on the needs of local governments and non-profit organizations.
Mayor Peterson named Steve Campbell, his director of communications since January 2000, as his new deputy mayor.
As deputy mayor, Campbell will continue to oversee public outreach, media relations and event planning, design long-term marketing strategies and serve as the mayor's spokesperson. He also will concentrate on efforts to market Indianapolis nationally and internationally as an economic development hub and convention and tourism destination.
Coleman's last day on the job will be February 4. Her role as the chief liaison to neighborhoods and other responsibilities of the three deputy mayors - Jane Henegar, Melina Kennedy and Campbell - will be rearranged in the next few weeks.
"Carolyn Coleman has been a leader on so many important issues in our city, from cracking down on neighborhood blight to community development to affordable housing to improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods," Mayor Peterson said. "Because of her leadership and involvement, projects like Fall Creek Place have been showered with praise and copied across the country.
"I will miss her talents in my office, but look forward to her continuing to serve our community and her good work for one of our city's great businesses."
Coleman joined Mayor Peterson's administration in January 2000 as director of the Department of Metropolitan Development. Under her leadership, Fall Creek Place, the national, state, and local award winning redevelopment, got underway.
In June 2001, Peterson named her deputy mayor for neighborhoods. Before joining city government, Coleman practiced law with Baker & Daniels and also spent 11 years with AT&T in a variety of sales management positions. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas and the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis.
Before joining city government in 2000, Campbell worked as communications director for the late Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon. He also was deputy press secretary for former Gov. Evan Bayh and assistant to former Indiana Attorney General Pamela Carter for public and media relations. He also was a Governor's Fellow under Bayh and interned for former Congressman Andy Jacobs and for former Indiana Secretary of State Joseph Hogsett.
"Steve Campbell has brought incredible insight and strategic planning to the Mayor's Office," Mayor Peterson said. "I've depended on Steve's good judgement and sound advice for the last five years, and I'm glad we'll continue to work together.
"I'm happy he has agreed to take on this new challenge, while continuing his involvement in public affairs."
He received a bachelor's degree in political science from Wabash College and a law degree from the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis. He also studied U.S. government at The American University in Washington, D.C.
He is a member of the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana and vice president of the board of the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault. He also has been chair of Indianapolis USA, a collaborative effort to promote Indianapolis nationally and internationally, co-chair of the Colts-Business Alliance public awareness committee, vice-chair of the 2004 US Olympic Wrestling Trials and co-chair of the National League of Cities Indianapolis promotions committee.
