Lifting-up Public Education and Supporting Our Youth

A quality public education system is the cornerstone of a world-class city. As the next generation of leaders, today's youth need an educational foundation built on knowledge and experience that will allow them to succeed in the future. It is up to us as a community to help provide our young people with the educational opportunities to acquire the life-skills necessary to succeed.

Indianapolis is very fortunate to have a strong foundation of quality public education opportunities, along with a community that has shown the desire and dedication to come together in support of improving our public schools even more.

City government, businesses and civic organizations came together in support of a plan that will pay for new schools, add air conditioning and improve the condition of existing schools within Indianapolis Public Schools. Working with the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning at the University of Indianapolis, the city secured an $11.3 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help create 10 new small high schools and convert five large high schools into smaller, more effective schools.

Since 2002, public school options in Indianapolis have expanded with the addition of charter schools, which give families more choices and students more academic opportunities.

Over the last four years, we have worked to lift-up public education and support our
youth.

But there is more to be done. . .
