History of MACD
James K. Pauley and many other disability activists founded the Indianapolis Mayor's Advisory Council on Disability in the 1970s, prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was formed as an inclusive, non-political coalition of persons with disabilities, advocacy groups, private industries, community service agencies and city administrators to increase accessibility and awareness in our city.
Since that time, the council's efforts have focused upon an array of issues, influencing physical projects such as city sidewalks and curb ramps, RCA Dome and Convention Center, Union Station, Circle Centre Mall and Conseco Fieldhouse. Over the years, the council has also impacted programmatic accessibility such as Indianapolis public and para- transit transportation, employment and recreational opportunities and accessible housing and voting in Indianapolis.
Ever since its inception, the council endeavors to give voice to the abilities and strengths of people with disabilities and raise awareness about the assets and contributions this population brings to our community. We strive to recognize success stories, distinguished service to the community and commitment to inclusion through our annual awards program.
