Now accepting applications for the 2nd IMPD Reserve Recruit Class
Scheduled to Begin February 2009

An Application in .pdf format may be printed from this website and mailed to the address on the form

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Reserve Police Officer recruit class.  This is a perfect opportunity for those:

  • with full-time careers who are interested in volunteering in their community as a police officer, or
  • who want to explore law enforcement as a full-time career option.

The IMPD Police Reserve Unit is comprised of a diverse group of citizens, including doctors, lawyers, college students, soldiers, and welders, just to name a few.  While the Reserve Unit is as diverse as our city, all of its members share a common interest of serving our community as police officers.

Reserve police officers have the same training, authority, and responsibility as their full-time counterparts.  Duties include patrol, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, enforcing traffic laws, and performing duties relating to police-community relations in working with citizens and neighborhood groups to solve problems.  After completing all of the training requirements, reserve police officers are granted full police powers.

Benefits include:

  • The opportunity to make a real difference in the community
  • Accredited law enforcement training and opportunities for advanced training (K-9, motorcycles, etc.)
  • Take-home police car, subject to availability
  • Uniforms and equipment
  • Medical and liability coverage while performing official duties
  • Fast-track field training for eligible reserve IMPD officers who want to become full-time IMPD officers

Participants are expected to fulfill the following commitments:

  • Successfully complete all initial training requirements (570 academy hours, plus field training)
  • Volunteer a minimum of 288 hours of assigned duty per year (average 24 hours per month)
  • Obey all laws and applicable general orders and regulations

Minimum requirements:

  • Be a resident citizen of the United Sates
  • Be at least 21 years old to apply, but not have reached your 65th birthday by the date of the swearing-in ceremony
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Cannot have been convicted of a felony
  • Cannot have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence under 18 USC Sec 922(g)
  • Cannot have been dishonorably discharged from the military
  • Possess a valid driver's license from your state of residence
  • Be a resident of Marion County, Indiana, at the date of your swearing-in ceremony
  • Pass a mandatory drug screening test and the applicant screening  process
