The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is committed to bringing accurate statistics concerning reported crime to the public by the quickest and most efficient means possible. In furtherance of this commitment, downloadable text (.txt) files have been made available via this webpage to provide the Department's official Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Part 1 crime group statistics for public use.
The Uniform Crime Report is a program administered by the federal government in which crime statistics from across the country are reported to the FBI in a uniform manner based on crime definitions determined by the FBI. UCR Part 1 crime groups are murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and vehicle theft. Simple assaults are also currently counted at the request of the FBI however they are not a Part 1 crime group. Similarly, vandalisms, etc. appear in the 2006 Marion County Sheriff Department file.

Files for subsequent years represent the IMPD jurisdiction. The most recent year's file is updated as those statistics are finalized for each calendar month. There is generally a 60-90 day delay in finalizing the statistics after the calendar month has ended.

After clicking on one of the download file names and opening the file, select File - Save As from the menu option to save the file to your computer.
The columns that are included in the files contain the following described data:
- "Case Number" is the number assigned to the police report when the information is taken from the victim
- "UCR Code" is the numeric designation of the UCR classification of the crime group described in the police report.
- "Date" is the date the crime occurred or the earliest date the crime could have occurred if only a span of time is known.
- "Time" is the time the crime occurred or the earliest time the crime could have occurred if only a span of time is known.
- "Crime" is the classification group of the incident based on federal Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines. There is only one crime group allowed for each report. If a victim suffers multiple crimes during a single incident, a hierarchy rule defined by the FBI is used to classify the incident.
- "Address" is the location where the crime actually occurred if known.
- "Beat" is the police area in which the address is located (IMPD Beat Map Since September 2008; IMPD Beat Map through August 2008; IPD/MCSD Beat Map)
- "X-Coord" is one part of a code utilized in mapping software in conjunction with the Y_Coord to plot a point or crime on a map. This column is available only for the Indianapolis Police Department and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department files.
- "Y-Coord" is the other part of the code utilized in mapping software in conjunction with the X_Coord to plot a point or crime on a map. This column is available only for the Indianapolis Police Department and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department files.
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
Please note that the specific addresses for sex crimes have been zeroed out to the 100 block of the street address in order to protect the identities of sexual assault victims as is required by law. Furthermore, XY coordinates for the crime locations are provided for use in mapping software for the former Indianapolis Police Department and the current Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department files. The XY coordinates, where available, match the addresses based on the street centerline rather than on parcels so any mapping that is done will represent only an estimation of the location where the crime occurred. The Projected Coordinate System used to produce the XY coordinates is "NAD_1983_StatePlane_Indiana_East_FIPS_1301_Feet".
Crimes in which the locations of occurrence are not known is 0.6% in the 2006 Indianapolis Police Department file and will vary in the files for subsequent years as additional data are added.
