The Appeals Division handles direct appeals for indigent citizens who were convicted of a crime and sentenced in Marion County.

Prior to1997, the Appeals division consisted entirely of contract attorneys. In 1997, the Public Defender Agency began the process of establishing a full-time appeals division by hiring an Appellate Administrator. Since that time, the Agency has expanded its appeals division to eleven full-time staff which includes the Administrator, six attorneys, an administrative assistant, a records clerk, a paralegal and a secretary/receptionist .

The remainder of the division is made up of 42 contractual attorneys who are assigned appeal cases on a rotational basis. If you are a client and need to know who is handling your appeal, you should contact the Appeals Office. If you want to know the status of your appeal, please contact your assigned Appeals Attorneys directly.
