Employment Opportunities

If you are interested in any of the positions listed below, you must fill out an application  in the Human Resources Office located at 200 E. Washington Street, Suite 1541 City County Building. 

Application & Pre-Employment testing hours are as follows:

POSITION:  Major Felony Attorney- Continuous Posting

SALARY: $53,000 + commensurate with experience

JOB NUMBER: 2007-318

POSITION SUMMARY:  The duties of an attorney are to vigorously pursue equal justice within the tenants of professional responsibility, to provide high quality, effective representation of counsel, and to implement Agency policy whenever such implementation does not conflict with the interests of an individual client. The individual attorney reports to the Chief Counsel. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Admitted to the Indiana BAR and member in good standing. The attorney should have a minimum of two (2) years criminal litigation experience and must have tried at least two (2) felony jury trials to completion. Proficiency in computer use and word processing is desirable. The attorney should have good trial skills, as well as a professional courtroom demeanor. POSITION: Juvenile CHINS/TPR Attorney

SALARY: $43,000.00 + commensurate with experience.

JOB NUMBER: 2006-719

POSITION SUMMARY: A Juvenile Division "Child In Need Of Services-Termination of the Parent-Child Relationship" Staff Attorney is well educated in juvenile and family law and is already, or is willing to be, trained as a litigator.  The CHINS-TPR Staff Attorney's primary function is to advocate the most difficult and serious of cases those involving a parent's right to raise his/her child.  The petition allegations arise from physical or sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, need for medical or educational services, mental health services and/or poverty.  The child or adult client often presents with multiple issues:  mental health, drug, and poverty, physical, educational deficiencies or mental disabilities that have a profound impact on the majority of cases. Many are incarcerated or homeless, and the CHINS-TPR Attorney must be willing and able to address these issues with understanding, compassion, intelligence and insight. The CHINS-TPR Attorney works in the Marion Superior Court, Juvenile Division and other superior courts defending parents against petitions filed by the Division of Child Services-Marion County Office (formerly known as the Office of Family and Children or the Welfare Department), so the Attorney must possess experience in the juvenile justice system.  The CHINS-TPR Attorney must have a working knowledge of the services available in the community and be instrumental in the formulation of a client's plan for the reunification of his/her family.  The Court's requirement to order what is in the best interests of the child often circumvents or frustrates the legal rights of the parent, and the Attorney must be ready and able to vigorously defend the client.  The CHINS-TPR Attorney also works with the Child Advocate assigned to represent the interests and concerns of the children in the case.  The CHINS-TPR Attorney will be keenly aware that 'time is of the essence' in these cases due to the requirements of the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act, and current Indiana law. The Attorney must be a team player and work diligently until case objectives are met. The CHINS-TPR Attorney must be organized, manage time well, multi-task, write clearly and concisely, be able to communicate effectively with children and adults, be able to research, interpret and apply the law, and articulate the client's position to the Court and others.  Proper evaluation and investigation of cases is critical.   The Attorney must also be skilled at direct and cross-examination of lay and expert witnesses; be skilled in trial procedures, rules of evidence and appellate practice. The successful candidate will also have a working knowledge of child, adolescent adult and abnormal psychology; drug culture use and abuse; the DSM-IV and mental health; diversity and cultural issues; conflicts of law, international law and treaties; sexual abuse and areas of forensic medicine. The successful Attorney candidate will be required to follow specific administrative  and procedural protocol timelines and must be able to work successfully in a chaotic environment.

QUALIFICATIONS: Licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana and is a member in good standing. One (1) year of criminal litigation experience, two years of relevant practical experience, and must have experience and knowledge of juvenile and family law. POSITION:  D Felony Attorney

SALARY: $45,134.00

JOB NUMBER: 2007-310

POSITION SUMMARY:  The duties of an attorney are to vigorously pursue equal justice within the tenets of professional responsibility, to provide high quality, effective representation of counsel, and to implement agency policy whenever such implementation does not conflict with the interest of an individual client.  D felony attorneys represent clients charged with violating D felony offenses.  Typical D felony cases are theft, prostitution, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and habitual traffic violators.  The sentence range for these offenses is six months to 3 years.  All cases are disposed of through jury trial, bench trial, guilty plea or dismissal.  This individual will report to the D Felony Division Leader . 

QUALIFICATIONS: License to practice law in the state of Indiana and is in good standing with the Indiana BAR.  Criminal litigation experience and general knowledge of the D felony courts and strong communication skills are preferred. POSITION:  Paralegal

SALARY: Based on Division
                  $24,052 Misdemeanor
                  $26,000 D Felony
                  $28,224 Major Felony
                  $36,750 Investigative

JOB NUMBER: 2007-326

POSITION SUMMARY:  Paralegals provide professional legal support to staff attorneys. Paralegals assist the public defenders assigned to his/her court as directed. Duties will include, but are not limited to: assist public defenders with case development, client interviews, witness interviews both in office and at the Marion County Jail, limited investigation, taking statements, photographs, measurements, subpoena preparation, record retrieval, document evaluation, witness organization during trial, legal research and document preparation, and any other duties connected with trial preparation and assistance as assigned by the Public Defender. Paralegals provide in and out of courtroom support for staff attorneys.  In addition this position may be required to appear in court on a daily basis, but at a minimum will participate in client's trials and any hearings designated by the attorney on a case. The position of the paralegal may include other administrative and court functions as directed by the Division Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A High School diploma or equivalent is required. A college degree, Associate's Degree or certificate in paralegal studies or at least (1) year experience as a paralegal is preferred. Placement or assignment to a division will be based on qualifications and experience. Familiarity with research techniques or law enforcement is also a plus.  The candidate should be well-organized and work well under pressure. This position requires excellent oral and writing skills.  Must possess typing and computer skills.  A valid driver's license and dependable transportation is required for some paralegal positions. POSITION:  Misdemeanor Attorney

SALARY: $43,000

JOB NUMBER: 2007-195

POSITION SUMMARY:  The duties of an attorney are to vigorously pursue equal justice within the tenets of professional responsibility, to provide high quality, effective representation of counsel, and to implement agency policy whenever such implementation does not conflict with the interest of an individual client.  Misdemeanor attorneys represent clients charged in misdemeanor of domestic violence courts.  Typical misdemeanor court cases include operating a vehicle while intoxicated, prostitution, and possession of marijuana, trespass, battery and public intoxication.  All cases are disposed of through jury trial, bench trial, guilty plea or dismissal.  This individual will report to the Misdemeanor Division Leader.

QUALIFICATIONS:  License to practice law in the state of Indiana and is in good standing with the Indiana BAR.  Criminal litigation experience and general knowledge of the misdemeanor courts and strong communication skills are preferred.
