Red Zone

The Red Zone Diversion Program deals with defendants arrested for patronizing a prostitute.  Offenders with no prior criminal history are eligible for this program, which emphasizes that prostitution and patronizing a prostitute are not victimless crimes.  Rather, an entire neighborhood suffers.

A Red Zone participant undergoes a blood test

On a Saturday morning, defendants come face to face with members of the community, Prosecutor's Office, police department and Health Department.  They are tested for sexually transmitted diseases and educated on the health risks associated with prostitution.

The defendants also participate in a community impact panel discussion, where community representatives confront these offenders about their behavior.  The remainder of the day is spent picking up trash or other cleanup activity.

They are ordered to stay away from the neighborhood in which they offended.  If they have no new offenses in a two-year time period, the charges are dismissed.
