Three Women Plead Guilty to Neglect of Three Children

INDIANAPOLIS - Three women who mistreated three young children over several months pled guilty to neglect of a dependent today.  Mary Corrigan, Edee Mowrer and Julie Watson will be sentenced February 2 in Marion Superior Criminal Court 2.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said, "Three women admitted their guilt today for the mistreatment of young, defenseless children.  This resolution is best because the guilty arte held accountable and the children are not re-traumatized by having to take the stand in open court."

The three women were charged in connection with their treatment of Corrigan's three children, ages 10, 8 and 6, from March to August 2003.  They all shared a home in the 4200 block of Estate Drive.

The women kept the children in the bathroom, letting them out only when they had to clean.  The children had to use caustic chemicals in cleaning, leaving burns on their hands and feet.  They were force to drink vinegar and eat peppers if they said bad words.  If the children misbehaved, they were forced to spend hours in ice-cold bath water.

According to terms of the plea agreement, Corrigan pled guilty to C felony neglect, carrying a maximum sentence of eight years.  Mowrer and Watson each pled guilty to D felony neglect, with a potential penalty of three years.  All three must undergo mental health evaluation and treatment.  Corrigan is not to have any unsupervised contact with the children until she completes treatment.  She could then petition the court to amend the no-contact order, subject to approval of Juvenile Court.
