Prosecutor's Office to Host Landlord Training Program

INDIANAPOLIS--The Marion County Prosecutor's Office is being proactive in helping property owners and managers deal with criminal issues on rental property.  The Community Prosecution Division is hosting a Landlord Training Program today from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center, 1802 North Illinois Street.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi will speak to the landlords at the start of the gathering.  "This training is valuable in keeping criminal activity down, keeping neighborhoods safe and clean and increasing property values," he said.  "Property owners, residents and law enforcement all need to work together to improve the quality of life for all."

Some of the topics to be covered in the training include the screening of tenants to weed out possible criminals; writing a lease agreement to protect the property owner should criminal activity take place; maintenance of the property for good living conditions and the value of conducting regular property inspections.

In addition, there will be a discussion about police involvement and the signs of drug activity.  Landlords will also learn how to evict tenants should drug activity be detected and the resources the are available to landlords who encounter the problem.
