GOP Fund-Raiser Pleads Guilty

INDIANAPOLIS—The former executive director of the Indiana Senate Majority Campaign Committee pled guilty this morning to taking thousands of dollars from committee coffers and trying to cover it up   Bradley Hiller pled guilty to one count of theft and one count of filing a fraudulent campaign finance report (both D felonies) in Marion Superior Criminal Court 9.  Sentencing was set for September 21.

According to the terms of the plea agreement, any sentence is open to argument with a total sentence not to exceed 1˝ years.  He would also pay restitution of $146,775.

"Corruption knows no political allegiance," said Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi.  "This was a case where someone in a position of responsibility siphoned off a considerable amount of money to line his own pockets.  He needs to be held accountable."

Hiller served as executive director of the committee, which raises funds to elect Republicans to the Indiana Senate, from January 2001 to November 2003.  He admitted to writing checks to himself from the committee's bank account and listing them as expenditures in the report filed with the state.  "Although we charged him with stealing just under $25,000," explained Brizzi, "we have evidence that more than $146,000 was taken."
