Jail Mail

Persons in the Marion County Jail can receive mail during the time they are incarcerated. All mail is delivered in person, as it is received, to those for whom it is addressed. Mail is distributed Monday through Friday. No delivery is made on weekends or holidays. Mail is not delivered to inmates who are unable to produce a valid and legible Jail identification armband. All mail (with the exception of 'legal mail') is opened and inspected for contraband and security breaches according to federal guidelines. Mail pertaining to legal matters is opened in the presence of the inmate to whom it is addressed. Nothing in these regulations is intended to restrict an inmate's correspondence with their attorney, or any other officer of the court, or restrict the number of items mailed. Any threats or illegal contraband received via the mail will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for investigation and legal action.

The inmate address for incoming mail must consist of the inmate's name (as used at the time of the arrest and processing), their gallery number, cell housing number (3A, TF3, 2P, etc.) and the Marion County Jail address- see the example below:

Mail received at the Jail that does not display the correct information may be delayed in delivery or be returned to the sender.

Mail received for inmates who are no longer at the Marion County Jail is returned to the sender.

As a general rule, inmates are allowed to receive letters, cards, post cards and 35mm type of photographs. Inmates are also permitted to receive soft back books (No hard covers) and magazines from outside of the facility, but only if the material is mailed directly from a publisher or a book club- not from an individual.

The following items are NOT accepted for persons housed in the Marion County Jail:
