Special Deputy Wagon Drivers
This Reserve Section program provides prisoner transportation during the weekends for merit and reserve deputies. This is an unpaid position. Jail wagons allow deputies to stay in their districts instead of transporting prisoners to the Lockup.
At present, persons wishing to become a special deputy must attend and successfully complete the MCSD Special Deputy Academy consisting of 200 hours of instruction. Classes include report writing, C.P.R., first aid, arrest procedures, accident investigation, crisis intervention, narcotics enforcement, warrants, searches, traffic law, and officer survival. All officers must pass all exams with a minimum score of 70% with the exception of the First Aid Course where a score of 80% or better is required. Officers who complete the academy are then required to complete training with a Field Training Officer (FTO). Each ride is evaluated and you must past all phases during each ride. Persons who successfully complete all phases of training are sworn in as Marion County Special Deputies. Wagon Drivers are issued BDU's (uniforms), departmental handgun, radio, pepper spray, handcuffs and baton.
