Reserve Deputy Program
The Marion County Sheriff's Department Reserve Division is the only reserve program in America capable of completely replacing all Merit Deputies on the road while they attend training without accumulating overtime. The Reserve Division was formed in 1968 to supplement the Marion County Sheriff's Department Road Patrol. Reserve officers are non-paid volunteers that work in road patrol, investigations ,serving warrants, jail duties, weather and disaster call-outs, crime prevention and, in particular, accident and fatality accident investigation. Reserve Deputies are also detailed for the Indianapolis 500 Race and 500 Festival Parade, the Brickyard 400, the Marion County Fair, Indianapolis Colts games and other public events.
Reserve Deputies include a variety of professionals including nurses, teachers, firefighters, EMT's, accountants, investment brokers and people who own their own businesses. Reserve officers have the same police powers and are issued the same equipment as MCSD Merit Deputies. The Reserve Division has its own rank structure and deputies are provided the same in-service training as Merit Officers. A fleet of cars is assigned to the Reserve Division and deputies receive a vehicle based upon the amount of time donated to the department, their availability and their performance. The Reserve Division utilizes cars assigned to the division 24 hours a day.
Each Reserve Deputy must successfully complete a 6 1/2 month training academy. Academy classes meets each Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00 am - 5:00 PM each week. All officers must pass all exams with a minimum score of 70% with the exception of the First Responder Course where a score of 80% or better is required. Officers who complete the academy are then required to complete 400 hours with a Field Training Officer (FTO). Each ride is evaluated and you must past all phases during each ride. Finally, each Reserve Deputy is required to pass both a written and and oral examination administered by their FTO's and Sergeant. Total training time during this 12 month process is in excess of 800 hours.
