EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR CORRECTIONS OFFICER
Be a citizen of the United States.
Be at least 21 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or acceptable G.E.D.
Have no felony convictions and no Battery convictions.
Pass a written entry-level examination.
Successfully complete a physical agility test and be able to participate in physical training.
- Gurney Lift (125 lbs) either pass or fail
- Fence Jump (4ft high) either pass or fail
- Run (5 laps around gym) must be completed within 92 seconds
- Dummy Drag (175 lbs) must be completed within 17 seconds
- Stair Climb (4 times up and down) must be completed within 53 seconds
Successfully pass an interview conducted by staff officers.
Submit to being fingerprinted.
Submit to drug screening and psychological testing.
Submit to a thorough background investigation including but not limited to:
· Credit rating
· Previous employment
· Criminal record
· Driving record
Have a current valid Indiana driver's license
Be in sound mental and physical health verified by a physician designated by the Department. There is no recourse to rejection by the Department physician.
Be willing to work any shift or duty schedule.
Employment by the Marion County Sheriff's Department must be the primary source of income.

In addition to base salary there is a $60 per year longevity pay benefit. Those assigned to the middle and late shifts receive a 50 cent per hour shift bonus. Effective the first day of the month following 45 days of consecutive employment life insurance is provided and there are three health insurance options available.
CORRECTIONS OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION
Marion County Corrections Officers are assigned to the Jail Division of the Sheriff's Department. Their primary duty is the custody and care of jail inmates. This may include but is not limited to the following:
· Conduct inmate admissions and releases.
· Perform searches of inmates.
· Account for inmate property.
· Fingerprint and photograph inmates.
· Complete records, reports and forms.
· Escort and transport inmates.
· Monitor and control inmate activity.
· Communicate by telephone, radio, computer and intercom.
· Maintain security in all detention areas.
· Respond to emergency situations within the facility.
· Enter and retrieve computer data.
· Communicate with other Department personnel.
· Communicate with inmates' families, attorneys and personnel of other government agencies.
· Maintain personal appearance, uniform and equipment.
· Attend regular in-service training sessions.
The Department provides all uniforms and equipment. The Department pays for uniform cleaning. Officers attend a six-week training academy before being assigned to work in the jail.
Corrections officers receive automatic annual pay increases up to six years. They also receive $60.00 per year longevity pay. There is a shift bonus of 50 cents per hour for those assigned to middle and late shifts. Shift assignments are on a seniority basis. There is a competitive process for promotion to sergeant and lieutenant. The promotion process includes a written test and a structured interview. The Department's Employee Assistance Program is available to Corrections Officers. They also are covered by the Public Employee Retirement Fund.
The Marion County Sheriff's Department is a drug-free workplace. Employees are subject to random drug testing.
