Colonel John R. Layton, Chief Executive Officer

Colonel Layton's career with the Marion County Sheriff's Department began in February 1974 when sworn in by then Sheriff Lee R. Eads as a merit deputy. Dep. Layton, as a rookie, was stationed at the Wishard Hospital detention ward as part of Jail Division duty for 2 years. From 1976 to 1984, John was assigned to road patrol duties patrolling predominately Perry and Franklin Townships. A promotion to Detective Corporal came about in 1984 when John became attached to the Undercover Section of the Department's Investigation Division. During his 10 year stint investigating narcotics and vice cases, John was promoted to the rank of Sergeant then named the assistant commander of the undercover section. In 1993 John was assigned to the Sexual and Physical Abuse Unit of Investigations until promoted to the rank of Captain by then Sheriff Jack Cottey and given the task of creating, building and commanding a new investigations section for the Marion County Sheriff, the Regional Gang and Intelligence Unit (RGIU). With the 2003 election of Sheriff Frank J. Anderson, John played a key role during the transitional period of the new administration and is currently serving as Chief Executive Officer with the rank of Colonel.
