Offenders who have a serious mental illness as defined by the DSM IV Axis I criteria may be eligible for placement in Community Corrections programming if they also meet our regular screening criteria. At the time of sentencing, qualifying individuals would be placed in either the work release or an electronic monitoring component of Community Corrections.
While participating in these programs, mental health offenders would be closely monitored to ensure participation in mental health treatment and that taking their prescribed medication. Community Corrections works with Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis to screen individuals for the program and to assist in other duties as needed.
The goal of this program is to reduce the number of offenders sent to jail or prison with mental health issues. Offender fees are based on the program they are enrolled in.
