First time voters are often nervous when they enter the polling location for the first time. To view a video with Marion County Clerk Beth White who explains what to expect at the polls, click here.

Here are the basics:

  • You'll enter the polling location through the 'chute,' an area about 50 feet between clerk's table and the volunteers politicking on behalf of their favorite candidate.
  • You will then be greeted by a clerk, judge or inspector. They will ask for your name and look it up in the poll book, a list of all registered voters in the precinct.
  • As they look for your name, a poll worker will ask to see a government-issued ID. For more information about the state's voter ID law, click here.
  • If your ID meets all four requirements, you will then sign the poll book acknowledging your participation in the election.
  • The clerks will then hand you a ballot and you'll be directed to a voting booth.
  • Take a moment to read the instructions at the top of the ballot and then simply darken the ovals next to the candidate you're supporting.
  • You'll then go to the voting machine and slip your ballot in to it.

This is a great tool to learn where you vote on Election Day and to confirm your voter registration status. Simply type in your address and click search.  Your precinct and polling place location will appear on the screen. To verify your voter registration status, be sure to enter your birth date on the main search page. The screen displaying your polling place location and precinct information will also display a confirmation message at the top of the page if you are registered to vote in Marion County.
