Indianapolis - The Democrat Caucus of the Indianapolis City-County Council is delighted that the NFL's vote this afternoon designated Indianapolis as host of the 2012 Super Bowl. "We couldn't be more pleased it was the juxtaposition of preparedness and opportunity, and the competition all but eliminated themselves" said Minority Leader Joanne Sanders.
The Caucus understands what it cost to bring the Super Bowl to Indianapolis both fiscally and politically. And, they know the vision and planning that goes into such an accomplishment. When the announcement was made this afternoon, several Caucus members reflected on the work of the last several years. As early as 2006, there were critical, albeit controversial, votes, not the least of which was to establish funding for Lucas Oil Stadium, requiring coordination with surrounding counties, the Office of the Mayor and the State Legislature. Next, the city had to be prepared to accommodate the groundswell of visitors to an event as large as the Super Bowl. This required another controversial vote to develop a Convention Hotel and ensure that the timing of its construction and completion was in keeping with the NFL timeline.
Securing the bid for the Super Bowl was a reflection of the wisdom and foresight of community leaders who came together over the last several years. "We appreciate the work of the current local Committee and are grateful that they built upon last year's presentation. As a city, we also owe a lot to ICVA and the Indianapolis Sports Corporation, who market Indianapolis all over the country, throughout the year" said Minority Whip William Oliver.
