Council President Asks All City and County Agencies to Make Further Budget Cuts

Indianapolis The Council’s 2008 budget was presented at the Administration and Finance Committee meeting tonight with an 8% decrease from the 2007 budget.  President Gray called upon all city and county agencies and other units of local government to do their part to cut budgets, also.  President Gray said, “I join the Mayor in calling for all local units of government in Marion County to reduce spending in 2008 in order to lessen the dependence on property taxes.”

In 2004, the total Council budget was $1.95 million.  Today, the Council announced another decrease to bring the budget to $1.62 million for 2008.  Even with increases for rent, IT, and insurance over the past four years, the Council has still managed to cut the budget 17%.

The President has also again issued an invitation to all Marion County residents to participate in the budget process.  He said, “Since everyone cannot attend all of our budget hearings, we have offered two ways for citizens to participate in this process.  One is Budget Talk, a form email, instituted this year, so people could tell us their ideas for the budget.  The other is a survey that has been added to the Council website, so that people can tell us what is important to them during this budget process.”

The survey is available at http://survey.indygov.org/cccbudget08.

For those without access to the internet, please call the Council Office at 327-4241 to obtain a paper copy of the survey.
