City-County Councillors Sponsor Suit Drive April 23 – 30, 2007

Councillors Joanne Sanders, Jackie Nytes, and Ginny Cain are sponsoring a week long effort to collect donations of professional attire and accessories for Dress For Success Indianapolis.   Dress For Success is a not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help women access and retain employment.

“It’s fitting that we scheduled our drive this week,” said Council Vice President Joanne Sanders.  “April 24 has been designated as “Equal Pay Day” 2007 – the date this year on which women finally earn enough to catch up to men’s earnings of December 31, 2006.  In other words, because of wage gaps, women have to work 16 months and 24 days to earn as much as men do in 12 months” Sanders continued.  “We want to do our part to help women break down barriers which keep them from being competitive in their industries of choice”..

Dress for Success Indianapolis assists women with appropriate apparel for job interviews as well as with workforce apparel once a person has found a position.  Examples of items the organization accepts include: skirted and pant suits; dress slacks, skirts, and blazers; blouses; shoes in excellent condition; purses and briefcases; and conservative jewelry.

Donations will be accepted in the Council Office in room T241 of the City County Building between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, April 23 – 30, 2007.  Tax-deductible gift receipts will be available.  . For more information, contact the Council office at 327-4242.
