Council President Congratulates Super Bowl Champions, Tony Dungy and the Indianapolis Colts

IndianapolisToday, President Monroe Gray congratulated Tony Dungy and the entire Indianapolis Colts organization for reaching the pinnacle of professional football, a Super Bowl Championship.

President Gray said, “Again, this team provided a reason for the fans to jump to their feet, cheer out loud, and celebrate.  Congratulations to Tony Dungy for being the first African-American Coach to win a Super Bowl.  Congratulations to Peyton Manning for being voted Most Valuable Player.  Finally, congratulations to the entire Colts organization.  I am happy to celebrate this victory with the fans who went to Miami and with those who stayed in Indianapolis.

The past few weeks have proven that this is a city united by our team and united behind our team.  It is no secret that Coach Dungy and the Colts players are widely considered one of the nicest teams in the league, and many people have commented on how nice Indianapolis fans treat fans of rival teams.  All of you, players and fans, have taken pride in your actions, in your city, and have conducted yourselves with class and grace.  The championship win and the behavior of every player, coach, and fan during this super season has truly brought Indianapolis closer to being recognized as an All-American, World Class City.

There have been many records, both professional and personal, set in this game.  There will be a lot of analysis, discussion, and disagreements about this game.  But one thing will certainly be said; nice guys can finish first.

I plan to stand and cheer alongside all the fans and say, ‘thank you, Indianapolis Colts. Congratulations, Champions, enjoy your reign’.”
