Bateman Assumes Council Role

Indianapolis - Paul C. Bateman, Jr. was sworn in as a City County Councillor today to represent Council District 11 which is on the northeast side of Marion County. Councillor William "Duke" Oliver, a longtime friend, administered the oath. A special election of District 11 precinct committee persons was held on August 1, 2006 to fill the vacated seat of Steve Talley. Councilman Bateman was unopposed in the election.

"I consider it a great honor to serve my community, and I am thankful that the precinct committee members in the district have confidence in my ability to represent them on the Council," said Councillor Bateman.

Councillor Bateman is a native of Indianapolis and graduated from Northwest High School. He furthered his education by taking classes at Indiana Business College.

As a minister at Healing Streams Word and Worship Center, he serves as the Community Outreach Program Director. The program helps uplift others in the community and fills a spiritual void in the lives of hundreds. Councillor Bateman is in the process of helping the church establish a community development corporation which will broaden the capacity of the church to help the community.

"My passion has always been to help others and the community by giving them the tools they need to be self sufficient. That’s why community development will be my major focus on the Council," said Councillor Bateman. He added, "Empowering others is the best way to ensure that we have healthy and safe neighbors."

Councillor Bateman is a past member of the Sheriff’s Advisory Board and is currently a member of Pathway to Recovery, and the Lafayette Square Coalition. In the past, he helped raise money for Children of the Way, an organization that is dedicated to providing clothes for less fortunate children. He has also served as president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists.

Councillor Bateman retired from Chrysler Corporation earlier this year after 33 years of service. His interest in politics and the community began through his membership in the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which allowed him to develop his leadership skills by working as an organizer, field representative and lobbyist within the organization.

Councilman Bateman has been married for 28 years. He and his wife have three children and one grandchild.
