Councillor Talley and Grandson Help Beautify and Add Value to Neighborhoods
Indianapolis - Councillor Steve Talley spent several Saturday mornings and afternoons volunteering with his 16 year old grandson, David Talley, Jr. The events were tree-planting, landscaping and beautification projects that were sponsored by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
"Planting trees and cleaning our communities instantly beautifies and adds additional value to our neighborhoods and makes them more welcoming," said Councillor Talley. "It’s great to see the transformation of the areas once the trees and flowers are planted. That is why my grandson and I were excited about our work and look forward to helping out on additional projects," he said.
The project included tree planting in the Old Northside, Holy Cross Westminster, the Old Southside neighborhoods, and along the Monon Trail. The landscaping and beautification project was in partnership with the VA Medical Center where a garden to honor VA Police Officers who have fallen in the line of duty was created. The VA Hospital project won the third place National Award for Community Beautification.
In the Ashland Homeowners Association area, Councillor Talley and his grandson helped build a park that will include a naturalistic area for community gatherings, an entrance patio, a stepping stone walk, wetland plantings and a fitness trail.
Councillor Talley said, "These projects were a great chance for my grandson and I to bond, and at the same time, he learned about the importance of nature and the environment. This also shows that making and keeping our community a beautiful place is something which everyone can do and take part in regardless of age."
